Circus characters

While painting "Circus" I was reflecting on the acceptance of our freak sides.

In the past, I often found myself very rigid and close-minded in my judgments—both toward others and toward myself. Unforgiving of showing too much emotion, of making mistakes, or saying the wrong thing. Unforgiving of our own ridiculous parts.

I sometimes found it difficult to loosen up, act a bit 'silly', or dance like a freak... I think I forgot what it means to play with our body and mind.

Painting "Circus" and "Trampoline" (see last image below) was then a way of freeing myself up, of reminding myself of the importance of play and spontaneity. Proof that sometimes, acting silly can indeed be a very healthy and balanced way to live our lives.

"Trampoline" is another piece inspired by the circus world.

It tells the story of a friendship, and the pure luck of having someone who is reckless enough to take risks with you, yet solid enough to save you from your own mistakes.

Because that is what true friends do: they can actually save you."
